INTRODUCTION
The Department of Philosophy was originally established in 1928. When the Taihoku ( Taipei ) Imperial University was founded by the Japanese at that time, it consisted of two "Divisions": Literature-Politics, and Science-Agriculture . The Department of Philosophy was one of four departments which were set by the Literature-Politics Division, the other three departments being History, Literature, and Politics. Following Taiwan's retrocession to Chinese Sovereignty in 1945. The R.O.C government renamed the University "National Taiwan University". Since then, the Department of Philosophy has had a history of more than 60 years. In 1957, the Department first established a graduate institute leading to the M.A. degree, and in 1985 began to offer a program leading to the degree of Ph.D. In the last 50 years, the Department has produced more than a thousand undergraduates and 231 graduates with the Master's degree and 24 graduates with the Ph.D. degree.
The Aim of the Department
The department of philosophy is designed to educate students to think philosophically, to equip them with good abilities to think, to help them acquire correct criteria to judge, as well as to attain a humanistic way of living.

The regulations for studying at the Department
Students have to study for at least 4 years and should complete a minimum of 128 credits. Courses required by the Ministry of Education: 18 credits ; General courses: 12 credits ; Courses required by the Department: 72 credits. Total credits of required courses: 102.
Courses Required by the Department
1. The Freshman Year:
Introduction to Philosophy, 6 credits; Elementary Logic, 4 credits; History of Chinese Philosophy ( I ), 4 credits; History of Western Philosophy ( I ), 4 credits.
2. The Sophomore Year:
History of Chinese Philosophy ( II ), 4 credits; History of Western Philosophy ( II ), 4 credits; English for Philosophy, 2 credits; Seminar in English Journal Articles, 2 credits; Metaphysics , 4 credits; Epistemology , 4 credits; Ethics, 4 credits.
3. Elective Course Required:
30 credits in Advanced Topics ( including at least 10 in the field of Chinese Philosophy, and 10 in that of Western Philosophy)
The Rules for the Students who want to transfer to the Departmen, and to take Philosophy as their Minor Subject or Second Major:
1. Rules for Transfer Students:
1. the average scores of previous school year is above 70.

2. Rules for Students taking Philosophy as Minor Subject: there is no limitation to the number of such Students.

Courses in Chinese Philosophy: History of Chinese Philosophy ( I ) ( II ), 8 credits;Metaphysics , Epistemology , Ethics, ( electing two subjects from the three ) 8 credits; Advanced Topics in Chinese Philosophy, 8 credits; Total 24 credits.
Courses in Western Philosophy: History of Western Philosophy ( I ) ( II ), 8 credits; Metaphysics , Epistemology , Ethics, ( electing two subjects from the three ) 8 credits; Advanced Topics in Western Philosophy, 8 credits; Total 24 credits.

1) Courses Required:
M.A. Candidates: "Seminar on Basic Problems of Philosophy" ( 3 credits ); two years of a second foreign language ( no credit, exempt if already passed the examination) ; courses related to the M.A. thesis ( approved by advisor and at least 4 credits )
Ph.D. Candidates: "Independent Study ( I ), ( II )" ( 4 credits ); two years of a second foreign language ( no credit, exempt if already passed the examination)
2) Elective Courses Required:
Students must chose courses from three of the following four categories ( 3 credits each ): 1. History of Philosophy; 2. Metaphysics and Epistemology; 3. Ethics and Philosophy of Value; 4. Logic and Philosophy of Science
Facilities:
1. In the Building of the Department of Philosophy, there are 27 offices for teachers, two for graduated students, and one seminar rooms. The Department has a library, a meeting room and a computer room for teachers and students. We also have 35 computers with printer, one fax machine, three projectors, and two copiers.
2. We have about 20,000 volumes of books in Chinese and 40,000 volumes of books in western languages, 200 titles of journals, and 600 volumes of theses and papers.
